Affordable Housing: What They've Done

George W. Bush:

Bush's proposed 2005 budget would cut the Section 8 voucher program by more than $1.6 billion, removing up to 250,000 needy families from this key low-income housing program.

Bush's 2005 budget also includes significant cuts to HOPE VI, which helps low-income families move into improved housing and become homeowners.

John Kerry:

Co-authored the Affordable Housing for Seniors and Families Act of 2000, which provided matching grants to states and local governments to preserve affordable housing in danger of being lost.

Opposed Bush budgets which cut housing programs.

Took part in the creation of the HUD "mark-up-to-market" program, which makes housing more affordable by increasing rent subsidies in appreciating markets.

Offered a successful amendment in 1999 to increase funding for the Housing Assistance for People With AIDS and Section 811 Housing (for people with disabilities) by $7 million each.
