Road to the White House: Compare the Candidates on Women's Rights Issues

Introduction

The National Organization for Women compiled the following comparison of the presidential candidates on issues of concern to women's rights supporters. The information is broken out by issue and by what the candidates have said and done. We urge you to share this information with your family, friends and colleagues—because we believe it clearly demonstrates why this is the most important election of our lives.

Despite its length, this compilation is not exhaustive. For example, Bush's attacks on women's and civil rights number into the hundreds—this document could cover only the most egregious violations. Ralph Nader, on the other hand, has never served in public office, so he has little record of taking action on women's issues.

In compiling this document, NOW relied significantly on the National Women's Law Center's comprehensive report, "Slip-Sliding Away: The Erosion of Hard-Won Gains for Women Under the Bush Administration and an Agenda for Moving Forward." The full report is available online. Other key sources included NOW's archives, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, AFL-CIO, Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, Legal Momentum (formerly NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund and OnTheIssues.org. Information from the candidates' web sites, voting records and campaign materials were also utilized.
