Judy Feder (D-Va., 10th District)
New Leadership for Virginia, Bringing Change and Accountability to Washington
October 30, 2006
Judy Feder, Democratic candidate for Congress from Virginia's 10th district is a well known health care expert on the problems facing those who are uninsured, or on Medicare or Medicaid, and those who need long-term care. Her nationally recognized expertise is regularly sought out by Congress, administration officials, and the national media.
Feder, a leading voice in the health care reform debate of the 1990's, was appointed to the Department of Health and Human Services in 1993. She and her husband, Stan, have raised a family in Northern Virginia and have lived there for over forty years. For the last seven years, Feder has served as the dean of Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute, where she partnered with the Department of Defense to create a career training program for returning soldiers.
As the war in Iraq continued, Feder became dismayed by the Bush administration's consistent failures of effectiveness and honesty. In a recent interview Feder said, "President Bush's policy in Iraq has failed. Though we cannot and should not pick up and abandon Iraq, we have to change course. My first act as the next representative from Virginia's 10th district will be to demand the removal of Donald Rumsfeld and insist that the President present a real plan to stabilize the region so that we can bring our troops home."
As a woman and an expert in health care issues, Feder understands the importance of maintaining women's reproductive rights. Feder fully supports a woman's right to choose abortion and birth control, as well as access to family planning services, including emergency contraception.
Feder's opponent, Frank Wolf—a twenty-six year incumbent—has voted with President Bush 90% of the time. He opposes stem cell research, supports President Bush's methods in Iraq, and is indebted to Big Oil. Recent polls show Feder is within striking distance of Wolf. As the failures in Iraq continue, and the number of returning injured soldiers continues to rise, there is a critical need in Congress for a representative with Judy Feder's health care and post-military career training credentials
