Patty Wetterling (D-Minn., District 6)

A Minnesotan with a Message and a Plan

October 30, 2006

After the tragedy of losing a child to abduction, Patty Wetterling turned her heartbreak into a commitment to public service. She is nationally known as a fighter for families and children in her home state of Minnesota. Now she is running to represent Minnesota's 6th District in the U.S. House of Representatives so that she can fight for families and children across the country. Because of her effectiveness in the face of adversity, and her dedication to women's rights, NOW PAC has voted to endorse Patty Wetterling.

Born in 1949, Wetterling graduated from Minnesota State University with a bachelor's degree in math science. She moved to St. Joseph with her husband, Jerry, where she taught math and they raised four children: Amy, Jacob, Trevor, and Carmen.

Seventeen years ago, her 11-year-old son Jacob was abducted by a man wearing a mask (two of his friends escaped) and he was never found. Her world was turned upside down and she transformed her grief into legislation—founding the Jacob Wetterling Foundation and working to pass a bill providing law enforcement agencies with tools to prevent child abduction as well as find abducted children.

Named by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as one of the "100 Most Influential Minnesotans of the Century," Wetterling played a crucial role in advocating for child safety legislation, including sex offender registration requirements and AMBER Alert laws, both enacted.

Wetterling has many plans and goals when she wins the Congressional seat including making health care more affordable and accessible to everyone, particularly seniors and children and protecting Social Security, understanding the importance of a safety net for seniors and others who rely on it.

Having successfully secured protections for child safety and pushed through programs to protect children from abduction, Wetterling has proven her effectiveness. We look forward to having Wetterling in Congress where she can continue her work to protect the safety of all families and children.
