Dr. Victoria Wulsin (Ohio, District 2)
Preventing HIV/AIDS While Providing Aid to Those in Need
October 30, 2006
In this crucial election year, the tight race in the second district of Ohio can make the difference for women's rights supporters. Dr. Victoria Wulsin, a leader in women's health issues, is running for the House seat against incumbent Jean Schmidt. Schmidt is perhaps best known for a floor statement that she was forced to retract, in which she said, "Cowards cut and run, Marines never do." She directed her statement to Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), who had criticized the Iraq war, apparently without realizing that Murtha was a decorated former marine and Vietnam War veteran.
In a race where both candidates are women, NOW PAC endorses the candidate who will strongly protect the rights of women and children. With her experience, Wulsin is the best candidate to make a difference in Washington.
Born in 1953 to a teacher and a social worker, Wulsin later graduated from Shaw High School in Cleveland, Ohio. After earning her B.A. at Harvard, she went on to get her M.D. at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. Wulsin earned her doctorate in Public Health with a specialization in epidemiology, and she has put this degree to good use.
Practicing medicine in southwest Ohio, Wulsin directed a health literacy program in Adams County. She is also an officer with the U.S. Public Health Service.
Wulsin has practiced medicine in more than 20 countries and she led a $30 million project for the promotion of women's health in five countries throughout Africa and Asia. Following the genocide in Rwanda, Wulsin participated in reconstruction efforts with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). More recently, Wulsin founded SOTENI International, a non-profit organization that works to prevent HIV/AIDS in the Kenyan orphan population. While dedicated to helping others, particularly women, Wulsin also found the time to raise four sons with her husband, Lawson.
Wulsin is devoted to improving public health and to providing assistance to people in need. She adamantly supports Roe v. Wade and the protection of abortion rights, knowing, as a physician that making abortion illegal will only hurt women. She recognizes that in order to lower the number of abortions, the number of unwanted pregnancies must decrease, and the only effective way to accomplish this goal is through effective family planning and comprehensive sex education.
Wulsin stresses the importance of protecting social security for seniors and those who need the social safety net. Wulsin also targets economic development that leads to good jobs and she will fight to make health care coverage affordable.
Throughout her public health career, Wulsin has fought for and developed programs that make a difference in the world. Once elected, Wulsin clearly will make an even bigger impact as the next Representative from Ohio District 2. Imagine the difference she can make drawing on her vast public health experience as an elected member of Congress.
