2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile

Judy Baker (D-MO, 9th District)

NOW PAC is pleased to endorse Judy Baker in her bid for Missouri's 9th Congressional seat. Baker showed her considerable political prowess during her time in the Missouri House of Representatives, where she turned her attention to health services, critical women's issues, and poverty. Her involvement in her community has translated into a deep commitment to passing crucial legislation, and working on both sides of the political aisle. Her background leaves her uniquely equipped to address a variety of issues, through her work in saving rural health clinics from closure and time spent at a non-profit dedicated to building beneficial partnerships with the country of Georgia.

In the Missouri House, Baker succeeded in passing legislation that standardized the supply of rape kits to hospitals, which would be provided to patients for free. She also addressed many confidentiality issues for survivors of domestic violence. Baker's commitment to healthcare was noticed early in her tenure, and she was honored as an "Emerging Healthcare Leader" by the National Council of State Legislators during her first term, due to her tireless work on the Appropriations, Health Care Policy, and Budget committees. Her dedication to the quality and availability of early education was also readily evident, and she was a co-sponsor of a program which gave educational funding to 10,000 low-income students over the period of four years.

Baker has pledged to raise graduation and literacy rates, and work toward achieving a reality of "no child left behind." She also plans toward improved energy efficiency, and promises to help the country strike a balance between a thriving economy and careful environmental stewardship. Among her priorities are an adequate health plan for veterans, the end of policies which have raised gas prices, and services which better prepare students for college. If elected to Congress, Baker will be at the forefront of change in Washington.
