2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile

Darcy Burner (D-WA, 8th District)

Self-Made Woman Promotes Principles and Progressivism

Darcy Burner, the Democratic nominee for Washington's 8th Congressional District seat, is a resilient, intelligent progressive, determined to win a congressional seat. She was defeated by a narrow margin in 2006, running in a district which has never been held by a Democrat, against an incumbent with substantial Republican Party backing. Her authenticity and principles have already appealed to voters, and her extensive grassroots network is a testament to the power of her message.

Burner is a supporter of a woman's right to choose, as well as a proponent of birth control measures to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. She will, if elected, work to make sure that family planning services and emergency contraception are available. An aggressive stance on climate change is another keystone of Burner's platform, and she has pledged to fight for the reduction of dependence on foreign oil. Burner has never backed away from a struggle, and after putting herself through Harvard, earning degrees in computer science and economics, she has had a successful career with Microsoft. Her determination, coupled with her strong progressive beliefs, will make her central to Congressional change.

If elected, Burner will back critical progressive issues, as well as bring a tireless, principled voice to the Democratic Party. In Congress, Burner will promote fiscal responsibility, work for new, more efficient forms of transportation, provide adequate healthcare, expand access to early education, and the return of Iraq to its citizens.
