2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile

Leslie Byrne (D-Va., 11th District)

Former Senator is back to set agenda to address critical issues

March 25, 2008

NOW has endorsed Leslie Byrne in her race to re-take the seat she once held as the first women elected to Congress from Virginia. Through her 20 years of service, Byrne has worked hard for the residents of Virginia and if elected she will continue to work hard and to protect women's rights.

First elected to Congress in 1992 as a member of the 103rd Congress, Byrne served as the caucus whip and passed more legislation than any other newly elected representative. Her legislative efforts focused on economic issues including reforming Medicaid, programs for first-time homebuyers, and job creation. Byrne has set records and defied boundaries since she began her political career. She served seven years in the Virginia House of Delegates, two years as the White House Director of Consumer Affairs, and four years in Virginia's State Senate.

Beyond her political career, Byrne has also been a writer, lecturer and business consultant on political and governmental issues, and she started and headed her own business, Quintech Associates, Inc., a human resources consulting firm.

Though she lost the 2005 race to become the state's lieutenant governor, she helped foster discussion on key issues including transportation, economic fairness, the rights of women and minorities, environmental conservation and consumer protection. Byrne has renounced the Iraq War and the Bush administration's policies that "subvert the constitution." Byrne's impressive past exemplifies her talent for innovative and pragmatic solutions to challenging problems.

With her leadership skills, solid experience and as a force for political change, Byrne will once again be an outstanding representative for Virginia and a stalwart supporter of minority and women's advancement.
