2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Judy Feder (D-Va., 10th District)
New Leadership for Virginia, Bringing Change and Accountability to Washington
March 25, 2008
Judy Feder, Democratic candidate for Congress from Virginia's 10th District, is a well-known health care expert in the problems facing those who are uninsured, those on Medicare or Medicaid, and those who need long-term care. Her nationally recognized expertise is regularly sought out by Congress, administration officials and the national media. Feder is again seeking the House nomination after coming so close to defeating 26-year incumbent, Frank Wolf, in the 2006 race.
Feder, a leading voice in the health care reform debate of the 1990's, was appointed to the Department of Health and Human Services in 1993 where she worked to expand health insurance coverage, monitor the safety of food and drugs and monitor Medicare and Medicaid. For the past seven years, Feder has served as the dean of Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute, where she partnered with the Department of Defense to create a career training program for returning soldiers. Along with teaching, Feder directs degree programs that train students specializing in international development, education, health, environmental policy and public and nonprofit management.
As the Iraq War continued, Feder grew dismayed by the Bush administration's consistent failures of effectiveness and honesty.
"President Bush's policy in Iraq has failed," she said in an interview. "Though we cannot and should not pick up and abandon Iraq, we have to change course." Feder's plan includes stabilizing the region and withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.
Furthermore, as a female health care expert, Feder understands the importance of maintaining women's reproductive rights. Feder fully supports women's right to choose abortion and birth control, as well as access to family planning services that include emergency contraception. Feder is also in touch with her community, as she and her husband, Stan, have lived and raised a family in Northern Virginia for more than 40 years.
Feder's opponent, Frank Wolf, has voted with President Bush 90 percent of the time. He opposes stem cell research, supports President Bush's strategy in Iraq and is indebted to Big Oil. Feder is poised to defeat Wolf. As the failures in Iraq continue, and the number of returning injured soldiers continues to rise, there is a critical need in Congress for a representative with Judy Feder's health care and post-military career training credentials.
