Rep. Joan Fitz-Gerald is a stalwart women's rights advocate vying for the seat in Colorado's 2nd District. With years of elected office experience, Fitz-Gerald is committed to ending the Iraq War and repairing our nation's health care deficiencies. "Together, we have accomplished a lot and seen many positive changes here in Colorado, and now it's time for us to help the nation solve tough problems," she said.
Fitz-Gerald was born in 1948 in New York City and was raised by a single mother along with two other siblings. Her mother taught school, instilling in Fitz-Gerald the value of education. Fitz-Gerald attended Holy Cross Academy and earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a degree in history from Marymount Manhattan College.
Fitz-Gerald began her political experience serving as the vice-chair of the Jefferson County Democratic party. She was the elected as the Clerk & Recorder, the first Democrat in the county's more than 100-year history. Fitz-Gerald achieved her goal of increasing access to the election process by pioneering the use of mail ballots in Colorado. She received an award for her success from the National Association of Counties. Fitz-Gerald served on the Motor Vehicle Board as a co-chair of the Clerk's legislative committee.
In 1996, Fitz-Gerald was the first woman to hold the position of President of the Colorado State Senate. She was nationally recognized for her accomplishments when she was elected Chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and was elected as the first woman to chair the DLCC.
Fitz-Gerald is a strong supporter of reproductive rights and will serve to protect the interests of women. She is committed to providing access to affordable health care, improving public education and developing economic security. "I see an opportunity to provide every family with a paycheck, every child with a text book, and every patient with a doctor," she said.
