2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio, 15th District)
Bringing Ohio Values to Washington
Mary Jo Kilroy's heated race to oust Republican Deborah Pryce from the 15th District of Ohio caught the nation's attention in 2006. Fueled by her narrow loss, she is energized and running again to win. The top items on Kilroy's agenda include providing prescription drugs for seniors, obtaining energy independence and withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kilroy is the daughter of a pipefitter and World War II veteran, whom she credits for teaching her the importance of personal effort and the value of education. She completed her undergraduate degree at Cleveland State University, followed by a JD from Ohio State University.
Kilroy went on to become a public interest lawyer in Columbus. She practiced law with her husband, Bob, often bringing her young daughters to the office.
Kilroy has always been active in her community. In 1992, she joined the Columbus School Board and from there moved to Franklin County Commissioner, a position she held for six years. Because of her strong commitment to women's rights, progressives in her district have enthusiastically supported her and worked hard for her in every race she has entered.
Kilroy also helped create the Columbus/Franklin County Affordable Housing Trust Corporation, which coordinates community development projects. For her service, she was awarded the Public Official of the Year award from the Central Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
During Kilroy's tenure as commissioner, Franklin County placed in the top one percent of counties in the nation. In fact, while Kilroy served as Franklin County Commissioner, Governing Magazine ranked Franklin County as one of the five best-managed counties in the United States. Kilroy is also adept at balancing budgets, an invaluable skill for anyone aspiring to Congress.
Kilroy promises: "I will end the misguided priorities of President Bush and Washington and bring responsibility back to our nation's government."
