2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz., 1st District)
Advocate for Rural Arizona
Ann Kirkpatrick, a candidate for Arizona's 1st Congressional seat, is a strong advocate for her district and for progressive ideals, and the NOW PAC is pleased to endorse her campaign. Rising from rural roots, Kirkpatrick served in the Arizona House of Representatives and gained a nuanced understanding of the political challenges that her district, state and nation face. Her experiences in the White Mountain Apache Nation, where she was born, and in other parts of rural Arizona have given her a powerful incentive to fight for rural America.
At the State Capitol, Kirkpatrick was a crusader for fiscal responsibility, an issue which she influenced through her position as ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee. Her extensive community service work, including a position as Coconino County's first female Deputy County Attorney and City Attorney for Sedona, illustrates her instinct for direct work with the people that she wants to represent.
If elected to Congress, Kirkpatrick pledges to improve roads and bridges in rural areas, reduce the poverty level among Arizona children, and provide adequate healthcare and clean running water to the outer reaches of the state. She has a plan for public school improvement by raising teachers' salaries, raising the dropout age, lowering class sizes, and making all-day kindergarten available. She is a strong proponent of using business to promote green technology, and vows to create jobs while ending dependence on foreign oil. Kirkpatrick will also help to remove the troops from Iraq as safely and quickly as possible, and ensure that the money that we have been spending on the war will instead benefit our citizens.
