2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Chellie Pingree (D-ME, 1st District)
Chellie Pingree, the Democratic nominee for Maine's 1st Congressional Seat, earned a reputation for toughness and honesty during her time as Majority Leader for the Maine State Senate. While in the Maine legislature, Pingree passed groundbreaking progressive legislation, and she proved herself a courageous public servant. In 2002, her outspokenness against the Iraq War caused the loss of her seat in the State Senate, but her commitment to integrity compelled her to continue to speak out about the war.
Pingree is a passionate proponent of women's rights, and will struggle tirelessly to defeat any legislation that threatens to limit access to birth control. While in the Maine Senate, she cosponsored a bill that established an Office of Women's Health and her efforts propelled Maine to become one of the first states to require insurance coverage of birth control.
In the Maine Senate, Pingree wrote the nation's first bill regulating prescription drug prices and fought for laws enhancing opportunities for small businesses. She consistently received a perfect rating from the League of Conservation Voters and stood up to pharmaceutical and insurance companies to lower prices. In Congress, she will strive to provide affordable healthcare and adequate funding for education, help students ease their debt burden, immediately withdraw the troops from Iraq, and promote a free and independent press. Pingree also has pledged to work for the passage of the Fair Pay Act. Chellie Pingree will bring a vital honesty to Congress and will be dedicated to the promotion of progressive ideals.
