2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile

Cheryl Sabel (D-Al., 2nd District)

The clear choice for positive change in Alabama

March 25, 2008

NOW PAC endorsed first time candidate and Alabama NOW state president Cheryl Sabel for the 2nd District. Sabel's commitment to social justice and her vision to bring positive change to Alabama are the cornerstones of her campaign to be the first woman elected to this seat. Sabel has dedicated her life's work to the struggle for equality and human rights and as a representative in Congress we can count on her to continue this work.

Sabel grew up in Birmingham, in a working-class family. Reared by her single mother, with the help of her maternal grandparents and numerous loving aunts, Sabel learned to speak up when someone was being mistreated and to fight for what was right.

Sabel developed her strong sense of social justice when she was 13 and living in Birmingham. "The 16th Street Baptist Church was bombed and I was about the same age as the four girls who were murdered. That tragic event, along with the images of police dogs, fire hoses, beatings, and slurs made a deep impression on me. I have never understood that kind of hate. I remember the marches and Dr. King's words, and they inspired me," says Sabel.

Upon moving to Montgomery, Sabel volunteered at the Southern Poverty Law Center in the KlanWatch Department and later joined the staff. At the same time, she earned her paralegal certificate from Huntingdon College and went to work for a civil rights attorney. Sabel then served as Executive Assistant to Judge Sharon G. Yates, the first woman elected to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals for the entire 12 years she served on that Court.

Sabel is committed to improving education and increasing the graduation rates of at-risk youth, keeping good jobs in the state and bringing new, good paying jobs to Alabama. At the top of her list is improving the access to quality health care, improving education and graduation rates, protecting reproductive rights, and working to pass universal health care while in Congress.
