2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Linda Stender (D-N.J., 7th District)
Send a Reproductive Rights Fighter to Washington
March 25, 2208
In the 2006 House race for the 7th District of New Jersey, Stender gave incumbent Rep. Mike Ferguson the toughest challenge he'd ever met in his years serving Congress. Though she lost, Stender came within 3,000 votes - about 1.5 percent - of defeating Ferguson. This year, Stender is in to win the open seat in this year's 2008 race. Her progressive ideas and commitment to human rights will be a strong asset to the people in New Jersey's 7th District.
Stender was elected to Borough Council and then a three-year term as mayor of Fanwood. Her next political stop was the New Jersey State Assembly where Stender became a leader in the fight to address climate change and global warming. She championed a bill to make New Jersey one of the first states to establish mandatory reductions in green house gas emissions. While serving in the New Jersey General Assembly, Stender introduced legislation prohibiting pharmacists from refusing to dispense medications based on personal philosophical, moral and/or religious beliefs, introduced a bill to phase out harmful trace mercury in vaccinations, and introduced legislation to encourage stem cell research through the construction of new research facilities in New Jersey.
As a mother of three, Stender is a strong advocate for children and families. She is committed to investing in education and opposes President Bush's inadequately funded No Child Left Behind Act. Recognizing the financial burden of private child care, Stender also supports expanding access to affordable, quality child care, both to ease financial burden and improve children's early development.
