2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Dr. Victoria Wulsin (D-Ohio, 2nd District)
Preventing HIV/AIDS While Providing Aid to Those in Need
In this crucial election year, the outcome of Ohio's 2nd District race can make a significant difference in the lives of women and their families. Dr. Victoria Wulsin, a leader in women's health issues, is running for the second consecutive time against incumbent Jean Schmidt for the House seat. Though defeated in 2006, Wulsin won more votes in the 2nd District than any other Democratic candidate in Ohio's voting history. Coming within 2,500 votes--a one-percent margin--of beating Schmidt, Wulsin is looking ahead to victory for the 2008 election. In a race where both candidates are women, NOW PAC has chosen to endorse the candidate who will most strongly protect the rights of women and children. Because of her experience, Wulsin is the best candidate to make a difference on Capitol Hill.
Wulsin earned a B.A. at Harvard and her M.D. at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. She has used her most recent degree, a Harvard University doctorate of Public Health with a specialization in epidemiology to practice medicine and direct a health literacy program in southwest Ohio.
Wulsin is an officer with the U.S. Public Health Service and has practiced medicine in more than 20 countries. She has pledged not to take taxpayer-funded federal health insurance until all Americans have access to quality, affordable healthcare. Once in Congress, she promises to take on insurance and drug company special interests in order to improve healthcare for everyone. She adamantly supports Roe v. Wade, knowing as a physician that making abortion illegal will only hurt women. She recognizes that the only way to decrease the number of unplanned pregnancies is through effective family planning and comprehensive sex education.
Wulsin is committed to setting benchmarks and goals to quickly end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home safely. She also is focused on ending the flow of money funding the war and working to invest in programs that will help people in Ohio and throughout the country.
Investing in initiatives that will make the U.S. economy strong is central to Wulsin's platform. Be it excellent schools, science and technology research, or providing access to student loans for college, Wulsin is in support of raising our national standards to ultimately strengthen the economy. She also aims to repeal tax incentives to companies that outsource jobs globally, opting instead for a plan to bring good jobs back to southern Ohio. Wulsin is committed to working to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by developing jobs in the business sector to produce alternative energy sources for the nation.
Throughout her public health career, Wulsin has fought for and developed programs that make a difference in the world. Once elected, she will make an even bigger impact as the next representative from Ohio's 2nd District.
