2010 Elections : NOW PACs Profile

Paula Brooks (D-Ohio, 12th Congressional District)

Paula Brooks

Paula Brooks

Paula Brooks is running for Ohio's 12th Congressional District and currently has no opposition in the May 4 Democratic primary. She is running to unseat the incumbent, Republican Patrick Tiberi.

During the past three decades, Brooks has held many positions, including service twice as the president of the County Board of Commissions. During her time in office she has appointed many women to chairs, expanded access to health care and worked to make child care more affordable. Brooks' resume proves she truly is a strong advocate for all of NOW's issues.

Brooks supports LGBT rights and marriage equality. On the County Board she ensured that there were non-discriminatory motions provided in contracts and is proud that hers was the first county in Ohio to allow for partner benefits. With two family members who are gay, Brooks understands all too well the irrational cruelty that is sometimes directed at members of the LGBT community.

Other progressive steps Brooks has taken include placing sex non-discrimination provisions into contracts, supporting affirmative action and making childcare more affordable. She has demonstrated support for reproductive freedom without restriction and is concerned about the anti-abortion language in the health care reform law. Brooks has helped the Columbus NOW chapter multiple times, including acting as pro bono counsel for a sexual harassment case.

Brooks previously worked with MADD, secured funding for Planned Parenthood and was the first person to donate money to Emily's List in Ohio. She was the president of Action for Battered Women in Ohio as well as the Democratic chair for the National Women's Political Caucus.
