Scott Withers
NOW/PAC is pleased to endorse Scott Withers for the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan's 5th District.
Withers is running in the Democratic primary against an anti-choice incumbent who has held office for more than 30 years. If he wins the nomination, this will be the first time in 34 years that voters in the 5th District will have the opportunity to send a pro-choice Democrat to the House. NOW/PAC was impressed with Withers' stance on NOW's issues and is proud to endorse him.
Withers agrees with NOW on important issues such as marriage rights, LGBT equality, and health care. He is adamantly pro-choice and believes health insurance coverage should be mandated to provide coverage of birth control and other reproductive health options for women.
Scott Withers promises to fight to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), saying that it is "federal discrimination of a minority group." He also supports the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and expanding HIV education and outreach. If elected to Congress, Withers pledges to introduce the Equal Rights Amendment and support repeal of the time limit associated with its passage.
Withers' Democratic opponent, Dale Kildee, is a 34-year incumbent who has run unopposed for 10 years. He is firmly anti-choice and was originally part of a group of Democrats who rallied around Bart Stupak in order to block health care reform. Kildee received an "F" grade from NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Withers is standing up in Michigan for all women's rights. NOW leaders and members look forward to working with him once he takes office.
