Suzanne Bonamici (D) is running in the special election for Oregon's 2nd congressional district following the resignation of Rep. David Wu. Bonamici was victorious in the competitive primary on Nov. 8, 2011, which willl now be followed by a general election on Jan. 31, 2012. Oregon has had no women in their congressional delegation in recent years, making Bonamici's candidacy especially important for women's rights supporters.
Bonamici staunchly supports NOW/PAC's six priority issues and is a proven leader who will move our agenda forward in Congress as she did in Oregon. She served three terms in the Oregon state legislature, including both the House and Senate, and currently serves as the Assistant Majority Leader in the Oregon State Senate. Bonamici started as a legislative assistant in the Oregon House of Representatives in 2001, and was elected to serve House District 34 of Washington County after her first campaign in 2006. After one term in the Oregon House, her leadership and hard work led to her appointment, and then election, to the Oregon Senate in 2008. She was reelected for a second term in 2010.
Bonamici's career as a consumer rights attorney and advocate for education has made a difference in women's lives. She is recognized as a leading voice for mortgage reform, and she has championed legislation to help homeowners and tenants facing foreclosure. She has served as chair of the Senate Committee on Consumer Protection as well as the Senate Committee on Redistricting, and has also served on the Education, Judiciary, and Consumer and Small Business Protection committees.
From working as a consumer protection attorney for the Federal Trade Commission, to helping small businesses in private practice, to standing up for middle class families in the Oregon legislature, State Senator Bonamici has earned a reputation as one of Oregon's most principled and effective leaders. NOW/PAC is delighted to be working with such an accomplished and determined woman.
